A New York ad agency contacted me after discovering my work online. The creative brief called for a New York City-based artist to paint an object that could be used to promote the launch of a new Manhattan branch of a national hotel chain. Upon accepting the commission I had no idea what the 'object' was going to be. In fact, I don't think the agency knew either. All we knew was that the client was going to deliver something to my studio.
A week or so later movers showed up at my Chelsea studio and dropped of a brand new Ikea couch! I had three weeks to find a way to create a colorful NYC vibe on the couch, making sure to incorporate the client's corporate identity somewhere on the couch. Using acrylic, spray, and specialized fabric paints I created color fields on the large cushions and structural parts of the couch. Then with paint markers, paper stencils, more spray paint and sharpies I went to town, hoping to create, with a sense of snark, humor and local color, an edgy, content filled piece with a sense of movement.
In the end, the ad agency and client were thrilled. The couch was delivered to a launch party in Manhattan's Meatpacking District at the Gansevoort Hotel where it was photographed with partygoers, agency staff and clients. Later the couch lived in the lobby of the newly christened hotel in midtown.
