NEW YORK - Construction zones can be seen on almost every corner of New York City, but an art project in collaboration with the Cultural Affairs department aims to bring a little vibrance to all that green plywood.

Scaffolding stretches for 300 miles around the city's construction zones. City-commissioned art is currently on display across one of those miles.

One of Culture Commissioner Laurie Cumbo's favorite pieces is "Steal Away" outside the National Black Theatre's new multi-purpose building at the corner of 125th Street and 5th Avenue in Harlem.

"It's become such an eyesore in New York City," Cumbo said of the scaffolding, "and Mayor Eric Adams wanted to make sure that we take that scaffolding down, and where we can't take it down, we're able to put up beautiful works of art."

Artist Xenobia Bailey found groundbreaking inspiration to move from Seattle to New York City to pursue African American design after seeing the NBT's late leader on television

"When I saw Barbara Ann Teer, it was almost like artistic license to go mystical with it, you know," Bailey said, "because we didn't have the family stories about, we did this or the customs that we practiced. Nothing was handed down."Describing her aesthetic as "Cosmic Funky," stars share the stage with the stars of the theatre throughout history, with nods to the native Lenape people who first called this land home.

The theatre now plans to incorporate Bailey's work into the new space, which will be topped by mixed-income apartments and welcoming back the community within three years.

"This is a small part in helping to make sure our communities are beautified, but not gentrified, making sure our communities are a reflection of ourselves, and this new edifice that might be showing up is not about displacing us but about grounding us," said NBT's executive artistic director Jonathan McCrory.

Zeehan Wazed included a Queens dance troupe in his Long Island City installation covering 700 feet of plywood walls along the water.

Sao Paulo, Brazil: spent an afternoon at the 35th São Paulo Biennial @bienalsaopaulo installed at the gorgeous post-industrial Ciccillo Matarazzo pavilion, lined with giant windows overlooking Parque do Ibirapuera. With works of 120 artists, it’s a wonderful show and well worth the trek.

Then made my way to @MASP The Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP), a super cool, modern art museum founded in 1947 by Assis Chateaubriand, and designed by Lina Bo Bardi @linabobardi.arq — becoming the first modern art museum in Brazil

Porto Alegre, Brazil; standing in my cousins yard, drinking chimarrão — a bitter, highly caffeinated South American green tea, called maté. Served in a dried out gourd and consumed with a steel straw called ‘bombilla’.. this stuff is seriously strong (!) and is a big part of Southern Brazilian “Gaucho” culture. A gourd of maté is often shared by a group of friends, or family using the same metal straw. And having produced more than 150 public art installations covering more than a quarter of a million square feet, we’re just getting started.

ArtBridge curates public art projects for local, emerging artists not only in all 5 boroughs of NYC, but with partnership projects now on 4 continents, ArtBridge is going global.

Graffiti Purses: during the pandemic I began this

Graffiti Purses: during the pandemic I began this new project -- painting on @coach handbags. (see link in bio for additional images).

The meaning of the graffiti? Well, I love arbitrary words, nonsensical phrases and random ideas that flow from my imagination -- misc. text, pop culture references, and images with bits of sarcasm, humor and characters of my own creation.

But don’t ask me what it all means. What I can say is that when I’m in that place of artistic ‘flow’ the ideas just keep coming. Perhaps I'm channeling something or someone? But I love working this way, and based on feedback so far, so do others.

5 Boroughs and 4 Continents. 2023 has been ArtBridge's busiest year to date. In fact a NYC Local Law 163 was just created and signed to codify ArtBridge's public art projects, giving us new legal permissions to install projects without special DOB permits. This has been a real game changer for us. This year has brought projects at even larger scale than previously possible, and has us working with more city agencies and some of the city's largest real estate developers.

On the international front, our partner, 'PAINT' in Cape Town, South Africa is working on our second collaborative project — now on the Nelson Mandela Center, and we are also looking at potential public art projects in both Sao Paulo, Brazil and the East African island of Mauritius. We still have a robust partnership with OSA, the Italian nonprofit with many ArtBridge co-branded projects in the Abruzzo region of Italy.

This all sounds very cool, right? But we still need funding to ensure continued success on all fronts, here and abroad. And yes, we are still a 501c3 certified nonprofit.

ArtBridge is proud to announce our completion of 50 art installations from a year-long, five-borough, public art exhibition at 16 NYCHA sites throughout New York City. The
artworks, completed by 59 local artists, amplify the stories, cultures, talents, and histories of public housing residents.

The program's final installation was completed in March at Manhattan's Baruch Houses.

Adventurous orange tabby kitten, seeks ‘forever’ home.

Vibrant and energetic, “Sunny” lives up to her name. The world fascinates Sunny and she’s eager to explore it all. Playing is what she enjoys the most, especially when people are engaging her. After she’s had her fun, Sunny loves to snuggle up for cuddling, petting and purring. Though she’s okay spending time on her own, Sunny can get bored and prefers being with friends and family — she’s very social and is happy to meet new people.

Sunny is getting used to being an indoor cat. She can ‘love’ bite and swat because she wants human food or your attention, or when overstimulated. She’s also fascinated by water! and loves a running faucet or a glass of water you’ve left out. Sunny is very smart, and food-motivated, and seems a good candidate for training.

Sunny loves seeking out closets, counter tops, and the latest empty cardboard box or paper bag, or anywhere she can spend a few cozy hours.  

Sunny will thrive in an active home where human adults and teens, or other cats could engage and play with her. Homes with toddlers, young children, or singles who work long hours outside the home are not a good fit. But if you (and/or you and a partner — and another kitty perhaps) work from home, that would be a great fit!
